sorbet hideaway...

today i'm excited to share my latest mini quilt, sorbet hideaway.

this 12'' finished log cabin block was made with the cricut maker and riley blake designs confetti cottons. isn't it the cutest?

here's what you need to make this mini quilt:

  • cricut maker
  • cricut maker rotary blade
  • cricut fabric mat
  • sorbet solid colors cut down to (4) 12'' x 12'' squares
  • white solid color cut down to (3) 12'' x 12'' square
  • blue sorbet solid color cut down to (1) 12'' x 24'' rectangle
  • 1/4'' yard for the binding
  • 1/2'' yard for the backing (cutting it down to a 24'' x 24'' square)
  • batting (1) 24'' x 24'' square
  • misc. sewing supplies, including thread, iron, and small scissors

i went deep into my stash and used a ditzy floral for the binding, which adds a little texture.

here's what you need to make the quilt blocks:

  • start a new project in cricut design space
  • using a square under shapes, create the following measurements (1 each):
    • 4 1/2’’ x 4 1/2’’ pink, 2 1/2’’ x 6 1/2’’ orange, 2 1/2’’ x 8 1/2’’ yellow, 2 1/2’’ x 10 1/2’’ green, 2 1/2’’ x 12’’ blue, 2 1/2’’ x 4 1/2’’ white, 2 1/2’’ x 6 1/2’’ white, 2 1/2’’ x 8 1/2’’ white, 2 1/2’’ x 10 1/2’’ white

    • make sure you unlock and lock your measurements so the sizes won't change as you create the additional square/rectangles

  • change the color of each square/rectangle as you create, making it easy for you to keep up with the measurements to make each block
  • to make the (4) blocks needed for this mini quilt, select, copy, and paste 3 additional quilt blocks into the cricut design space workspace

  • you can group each block together, moving them around to give you an idea of how your finished mini quilt could look (lots of fun combinations!)

  • once you're happy, go ahead and click on "make it"

  • you'll see your squares/rectangles broken out by color (mat)

  • make sure you're using the cricut fabric mat and place the fabric on the mat

  • select cotton fabric, insert your cricut rotary cutter and GO!

  • after you've finished cutting each color, organize your squares/rectangles

  • starting with the pink square, sew each piece together using a 1/4'' seam allowance, pressing each seam to one side

  • sew one finished block to a second finished block and so forth, pressing the seams to one side as you go

  • layer the quilt top with the quilt batting and backing

  • quilt and bind as desired

isn't this a fun mini quilt to make? it's so easy with the cricut maker. precision every time! being able to group, copy, and paste gives you a really easy idea of how multiple blocks will look.

i hope you enjoy this mini quilt as much as i enjoyed making it.

southwest modern...book tour

my amazingly talented friend, kristi schroeder of initial k studio just released her first book, southwest modern. it's beyond beautiful!

kristi and i met one year at quiltcon and spent a night bonding over our love for quilting and swapping insider fashion industry stories. it was love at first sight!

from marfa to new mexico, kristi's book features 18 modern quilts, each inspired by a specific location. outside of tips and tricks for piecing, kristi includes some of her favorites in each location. taking it from an awesome quilt book to an ahhhmazing quilt book. i'm not just saying this because kristi and i are friends, her book is seriously coffee table worthy. the photography, shot on location, is unlike any other quilt book on the market. and if you haven't checked it out, head over to her website to see a behind the scenes video of the book. so cool.

{side note: i drove from san francisco to washington d.c. with my two roommates on my big move to nyc. we decided to take the southern route, stopping in marfa (featured in the book) to see the infamous prada art installation. we loved marfa so much that we decided to be adventurous and spend the night. i would highly recommend a stop in marfa!}

okay, back to quilts. naturally i wanted to make the mini's in kristi's book, but kristi challenged me to break down one of her larger quilts into a mini. i'm just going to say it out loud, but half rectangle triangle (otherwise known as HRT) are not my favorite. but, i love a good challenge and decided to create my own foundation paper pieced HRT's. following the macho canyon quilt block, i made (3) 5'' x 14'' rectangles which features (8) HRT's. using riley blake designs confetti cottons solids in two of my favorite pink colors with a little turquoise for contrast, it turned out to be really cute. in retrospect, i should have machine quilted in the opposite direction, but none-the-less, it's the perfect little spring mini quilt. i used melissa mortenson's safari party leopard print for the binding and the floral print for the backing. i love a printed binding.

if you only buy 1 quilt book this year (but why limit yourself), buy krisiti's. from the photography to the beautiful quilts, you'll certainly be inspired. if you look closely, you may see a little tattooed quilter flare in her book too!

and if you haven't met kristi yet, please introduce yourself to her. she's kind, thoughtful, and authentic. she's a dear friend and i couldn't be more proud of her success!

follow along this week to see more designers take on southwest modern! i'm honored to be part of this talented group of bloggers:

zipper pouch "hack"...

okay, i'll admit it, i cannot make a zipper pouch. sooooo, i bought one (or four) and i'm excited to share with you how to create this zipper pouch "hack" using the cricut maker, foil iron-on, as well as faux leather.

personalized gifts are everywhere, so instead of buying one, why not make one yourself? michael's arts and crafts has an awesome "do-it yourself personalized" department right now. there are so many fun things including these zipper pouches.

here's what you'll need to "hack" your own zipper pouch:

  1. cricut maker & cricut easy press
  2. cricut iron-on (i used foil iron-on, so shiny!)
  3. cricut faux leather
  4. zipper pouch (you could also make your own!)
  5. fan pull chain with connector (i bought mine at a hardware store)
  6. png files
  7. pom-poms or additional zipper pull accessories

here are the step by step instructions for adding the iron-on:

  1. start by measuring your zipper pouch, leaving 1 or 2'' as a frame around the pouch.
  2. design your creative sayings in cricut's design space. i used the american typewriter font, adjusting the width and height as i designed the sayings. create, make, and sew are chic and classic. you can also upload the png files from here.
  3. once your satisfied, click "make" and follow the instructions, making sure you select mirror.
  4. using the standard mat, place your iron-on shiny side down.
  5. load your mat into the cricut maker and press the blinking light.
  6. once it's finished, unload your mat and weed your creative sayings. i cut mine apart from each other so it would be easier to iron on the zipper pouches.
  7. using cricut's easy press and a scrap piece of fabric, iron your creative saying onto the pouch, applying pressure for 30 seconds at 320 degrees.
  8. let the iron-on completely cool before removing the clear top layer.
  9. add your zipper trim and gift your new personalized gift. it's it awesome?

to create the faux leather zipper pull accessory, follow these steps:

  1. in cricut's design space, upload the png file or using shapes to create zipper pull accessory.
  2. if you decide to use a shape, add a small circle, slicing as necessary.
  3. using the standard mat, place your faux leather, leather side down.
  4. load your mat into the cricut maker and press the blinking light.
  5. once it's finished, unload your mat and weed.
  6. cut the pull chain to the desired length, threading it through your zipper pull shape.
  7. ta-da, you've just created a faux leather zipper pull accessory! how cute are they?

these zipper pouches are perfect for holding your favorite sewing supplies or to give as adorable personalized gifts. the possibilities are endless with cricut's iron-on and the easy press makes it a snap! i hope you enjoyed this tutorial as much as i enjoyed making it.

here are some behind the scenes photos to brighten your day! #reallife
