RBDNotSoBasic Project #2

put on your favorite pajamas and get ready to cozy up to the latest #RBDNotSoBasic project!

the inspiration for this project is the traditional log cabin block…made modern with riley blake designs tone-on-tone basic collection. each designer knocked it out of the park with their pillow!

the tone-on-tone collection is a mix of designer prints in blake, grey, cream, and white. they’re perfect on their own or mixed in with other basics. what would you make?

  • triangle

  • text

  • cherries

  • scissors

  • stars

  • stripes

  • daisy

  • and a few more!

i made (2) 18’’ x 18’’ large scale log cabin pillows with the grey and white tones. i started with a 4 1/2’’ square for the center and added 3 1/2’’ strips, creating the log cabin shape. it’s a great beginner weekend project. or, if you’re like me, you’re obsessed with throw pillows and decided to make more, hahaha!

the tone-on-tone collection is just one of many basic collections riley blake designs has to offer. have you seen crayola kaleidoscope? it’s arriving soon!

summer blush fabric...

i was over the moon when Sedef, fellow designer and owner of Down Grapevine Lane asked me to participate in her Summer Blush fabric release blog tour! this is her third fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs and trust me, it’s gorgeous.

if you’re not following Sedef’s blog or social media accounts, you’re truly missing out. her style is a mix of all things cute and sweet with a dash of modern. she also loves zakka and small details like hand embroidery and notions. with one book out already and one on the way, her work is incredible, you don’t want to miss it!

featuring a beautiful range or reds, pinks, and greens, the Summer Blush collection is delicate and sweet with a nice mix of florals and novelties. i chose not to work with the entire collection, hand selecting the ones that really stood out to me. you can see the full range here.

from the very beginning, i knew i wanted to create something centered around florals. i challenged myself to think of a traditional quilt block that could be updated to look modern. the tulip block was the perfect quilt block to stretch my creativity.

i created my own 6, 8, and 10 inch foundation paper pieced blocks, varying the widths of the tulips to give the quilt some much needed attitude. one block turned into three then five, then 11. then the unthinkable happened, i ran out of background fabric. wah, wah.

super bummed i missed my deadline, i decided to create a smaller project, this time challenging myself to incorporate the tulip block into other traditional quilt blocks like flying geese, log cabin, and half-square triangles. and guess what, it worked. how cool are these blocks?

in the end, the flying geese block won my heart. two of them back to back made a really cute bow-like shape, so i went with it.

the background fabrics are Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons and Shades, both from their amazing basics collections. i machine pieced and quilted this table runner using Aurifil 50wt thread and the BabyLock Journey.

oh snap, it’s time for me to go and finish the larger quilt. but first, coffee.

i hope you enjoyed hearing about my time working with Summer Blush fabric, now run out and get some before it’s all sold out!
