derby day fabrics...

the kentucky derby may have passed, but melissa mortensen's latest fabric collection, derby day is perfect for any spring project! and it's really cute too!

melissa is a mom of three, maker, blogger, and fabric designer for riley blake designs. her blog, the polkadot chair is well known in the craft and sewing industry and features lots of amazing tutorials and patterns (check out her bag patterns!).

derby day is her fourth fabric collection for riley blake designs and features 7 prints in 3 colorways: blue, navy, and pink. from starting the day curating your best outfit to finishing the day at the race itself, you'll find these charming prints perfect for any project! and be sure to check out her look-book for lots of wonderful inspiration and patterns.

when melissa asked me to join her at the races (and by races, i mean, impromptu blog tour, hehe!), i couldn't say no! naturally i'm drawn to her pink color story and the main floral is one of my favorites. the little pop of turquoise in the main print was the starting point for pulling my fabrics for this project which features two prints from derby day, solids from RBD's confetti cottons, and a yummy RBD gingham for the back!

this 26'' sq. quilt features a 2'' finished border and 10'' finished log cabin block. beginner friendly!

start with making (4) 10" finished log cabin blocks. the square of the log cabin is 4'' finished and each row i added is 2'' finished (alternating as i went). for the border, use 2'' wide finished rectangles and squares. i quilted with aurifil's 50wt in white. so cute, right?

p.s. i've been enjoying making traditional quilt blocks lately, it's a nice reminder of my quilting heritage! what are you working on?
