RBDNotSoBasic...Two Scoops

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

Two scoops for me, please!

This sweet #RBDNotSoBasic project is made with a variety of Riley Blake Designs basics.

These delicious, bright colors are from the following basics collections: Texture by Sandy Gervais, Shabby by Lori Holt, Hashtag, and Confetti Cottons.

And get ready, these quilt blocks are calorie free, but they’re teeny tiny.

I designed these foundation paper pieced blocks with the sashing surrounding the ice cream blocks.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • Two Scoops Foundation Paper Piece Templates (for purchase in my shop)

  • At least 3 Fat Quarters for the ice cream flavors, aka colors

  • 1 Fat Quarter for the ice cream sticks and cones

  • 1 Yard for the Background

  • 1 Yard for the Backing

  • 1/4 Yard for the Binding

  • 23’’ x 23’’ Section of Batting

  • Miscellaneous Sewing Supplies including, Rulers, Rotary Cutter, Thread, and Sewing Machine

From your background fabric cut:

  • (2) 2 1/2’’ x 15’’ rectangles

  • (2) 3 1/2’’ x 15’’ rectangles

  • (2) 3 1/2’’ x 20 1/2’’ rectangles

Here’s the simple instructions for making your own:

  • Make the Two Scoops FPP blocks.

  • Remove the paper from the back of the blocks.

  • Sew the “A” blocks together to complete the row.

  • Sew the “B” blocks together to complete the row.

  • Sew the “C” blocks together to complete the row.

  • Sew (1) 2 1/2’’ x 15’’ rectangle background to the “A” and “B” row.

  • Press the seams toward the background.

  • Sew (1) 2 1/2’’ x 15’’ rectangle background to the “B” and “C” row.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Sew (1) 3 1/2’’ x 15’’ rectangle to the top of the bottom of the completed rows.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Sew (1) 3 1/2’’ x 20 1/2’’ background rectangle to the left of the blocks.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Sew (1) 3 1/2’’ x 20 1/2’’ background rectangle to the right of the blocks.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Layer the quilt top with the batting and backing.

  • Quilt and bind as desired.

Using my BabyLock Journey, masking tape, and Aurifil Monofilament Thread, I created a wavy quilt pattern on this totally tasty project. If you want to learn more about why I use masking tape, you can watch my Fat Quarter Shop video here.

I know! I have a thing for rounded corner quilts.

I use my handy-dandy June Tailor Round the Corner ruler for the corners and bias tape for the binding.

Take your time sewing the binding to the front of the quilt. I use the Baby Lock 1/4’’ Quilting or Patchwork Foot with Guide and sew really slow. I almost always hand-stitch the binding to the back of then quilt when use have rounded corners.

Want to make this mini quilt bigger? Print out additional Two Scoops FPP templates to add more rows.
