RBDNotSoBasic: Sew Easy Flags
These #RBDNotSoBasic Sew Easy Flags are a follow up to the Sew Easy Hearts I shared in February.
These adorable quilt blocks feature foundation paper piecing and they only take a couple of hours to make! That’s perfect, especially if you’re looking for a sew easy red, white, and blue decoration or gift.
The blocks feature Riley Blake Designs basics including Blossom in Uncle Sam and Gunnysack in Patriotic. They also feature one of my favorite go-to basics, Shabby by Lori Holt.
And don’t tell anyone, but I added in a little Liberty Flower Show Spring. Hehe.
For this specific project, I decided to paint the embroidery hoops with Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Chalky Chicks paint in Cherry Pie, Overalls, and Picket Fence. Isn’t that fun? It gives the embroidery hoops a little extra something-something.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
RWB Flag Foundation Paper Piece Templates (click on the button below)
Fabric
Felt
3’’, 5’’, 6’’ Embroidery Hoops
Paint & Painting Supplies
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Fabric Safe Pen or Pencil
Ribbon
Fabric or Paper Rosette for Bow
Miscellaneous Sewing Supplies
Here’s the simple instructions for making your own:
Separate and paint the embroidery hoops. Let dry.
Trace the embroidery hoop on a piece of felt.
Following the line, cut out the felt circle and set aside.
Print out the RWB Flag FPP templates. Remember to print at 100%.
Make the RWB Flag FPP block(s) of your choice.
Remove the paper from the back of the block.
Center and insert the block into the embroidery hoop. Tighten.
Trim the excess fabric from the back of the embroidery hoop.
With the glue gun, apply the felt circle on the back of the embroidery hoop.
Using ribbon and a rosette, decorate to the top of the embroidery hoop.
To piece the blocks, I used Aurifil 50wt. #2021 and my Baby Lock Journey. I always use a size 90/14 needle and a 1.4 stitch length for FPP. A smaller stitch length makes removing the paper so much easier.
East Coast Trimming in the Garment District is my go-to shop for ribbon. Their selection is top notch! I purchased the vintage paper rosettes and black velvet ribbon I used for this project at ECT. Be sure to stop by when you visit the big apple!
New to foundation paper piecing or FPP? No worries!
My friend, Kristina from Center Street Quilts has an awesome Instagram step-by-step video series for FPP. You can also find several great tutorials on YouTube, including one I created for Fat Quarter Shop.
I hope you enjoyed this RBD Not So Basic Sew Easy project!
Wouldn’t these RWB flag quilt blocks be cute for a mini quilt or pin cushion? I can’t wait to see what you make!
