RBDNotSoBasic: Sparkle Star Mini Quilt
Sparkle, baby. Sparkle!
I wanted to create incorporate something geometric for my newest #RBDNotSoBasic project, so I turned to the world-wide-web and found the Sparkle Star Quilt Block Foundation Paper Pad from Lori Holt and It’s Sew Emma.
After searching through my collection of Riley Blake Design’s basics, I decided to create this modern mini quilt using J. Wecker Frisch’s latest basic, Painter’s Watercolor Swirl. The colors are vibrant and the print has lots of depth and interest.
Since my project features sixteen 6” blocks, I decided to use a 10” Stacker + Yardage for the background.
While I chose to use Painter’s Watercolor Swirl as the star, you could do the opposite for a completely different look. It’s like, choose your own adventure.
I pieced, quilted, and put the binding on this adorable mini quilt using my Baby Lock Journey.
For piecing, I used the following:
Size 90/14 Needle (My go-to for Foundation Paper Piecing or FPP)
Aurifil 50 Weight Thread (Color 2024)
1.4 Reduced Stitch Length (I use 2.0 when joining the blocks)
For quilting, I used the following:
Warm & White Batting (I usually purchase the Craft or Crib Size)
Masking Tape (Watch this tutorial)
Aurifil 50 Weight Thread (Color 2024)
Size 80/12 Needle
3.0 or 3.5 Increased Stitch Length
Walking Foot (I use Baby Lock’s Digital Dual Feed Walking Foot)
For binding, I used the following:
2 1/2” x WOF Fabric Strips (Cut and Sewn Together)
Matching Thread
2.0 or 2.5 Reduced Stitch Length
1/4” Foot (I used Baby Lock’s Quilting or Patchwork Foot w/Guide)
Hand Sewing Needle (For attaching the binding to the back of the quilt)
Matching Thread (I usually match the binding color)
Your personalized label (Mine are iron-on)
If you’re new to foundation paper piecing , don’t worry. There are some amazing tutorials online.
In fact, Fat Quarter Shop has a video showcasing how to use these awesome paper pads. You can watch it HERE.
This is a fun, beginner friendly project. All you need are four blocks across and four blocks down. To keep track of color placement, create a little diagram.
I can’t wait to see your version. Scrappy, modern, or anything in between — I have no double they’ll be gorgeous! Be sure to use #sparklestarquilt when sharing your projects on Instagram and Facebook.
