Introducing Texture...A New Basic

Happy Leap Year!

Today, ’m excited to share a new Riley Blake Designs basic with you. You’re going to love it.

Texture by the legendary Sandy Gervais features a tone-on-tone, sketched, irregular grid pattern and is perfect for just about every project. Seriously, I can’t think of one reason you wouldn’t want to create with this awesome new basic. It’s available in 30 amazing colors as well as pre-cuts. Yassss!

How cute is this clear-view tote I made (with a little help from Jack) using RBD basics, including Texture?

I used Rainbow Blossom on the back as well as Confetti Cotton in White for the background. That adorable foundation paper pieced rainbow block is a template from Quilty Pie.

You can make your own clear-view tote by watching Cindy’s video here. Trust me, they’re addicting!

I can’t wait to see what you make with Texture. Be sure to follow #rbdtexture as well as #texturefabric for projects and inspiration.

RBDNotSoBasic...Hexie Heart Pincushions

Roses are red, violets are blue, I couldn’t help but make a few!

For my next #RBDNotSoBasic project, I made these really beautiful hexie heart pincushions.

I used Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cotton, Lori Holt’s Shabby as well as Liberty London's new blender for RBD: The Wiltshire Shadow collection.

The new Liberty London cottons for RBD are printed on soft Lasenby cotton and are perfect for just about any project. Isn’t that stack a warm colors beautiful? The Wiltshire Shadow Collection will be in stores this month!

Here’s the supplies I used to make mine:

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Heart

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Heart Background

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Pincushion Backing

  • The Hexie Heart Quilt Block from Center Street Quilts

  • Weighted Stuffing Beads or Crushed Walnut Shells

  • Basic Sewing Supplies

Here’s how I made my Hexie Heart Pincushions:

  • Make any size of the Hexie Heart Quilt Block (they come in 3’’, 4’’, 5’’, and 6’’)

  • Cut the pincushion backing to match the size of your HH quilt block

  • With RST, sew the HH quilt block and backing together with a 1/4’’ seam allowance

** Remember to leave an opening to turn and stuff your pincushion**

  • Without clipping your stitches, clip the corners

  • Turn the pincushion right side out and gently push out the corners

  • Fill the pincushion with stuffing beads or crushed walnut shells to desired fullness

    • I’ve heard crushed walnut shells can damage your pins, use what works for you!

  • Hand stitch the opening closed

The first one turned out so beautiful, I had to make two more. Haha.

Pincushions are the perfect handmade gift, especially when they feature Lori Holt’s Sewing Pretty Pins and tied with black velvet ribbon. Wouldn’t you agree?

Be sure to follow the #rbdnotsobasic hashtag to see more awesome projects.

I have one more WiltShire Shadow project I’m working on. Hopefully I can finish it this weekend. Stay tuned.

Personalized Valentine's Day with the Cricut Maker

We interrupt all things quilting to bring an extra special Valentine’s Day craft project!

Sure, you could buy generic store bought Valentine’s Day cards, but why?

Personalized, handmade cards are so much better than store bought! Especially with fabric and paper!

The Cricut Maker cuts through just about every type of paper, felt, fabric, basswood and makes gift giving for the holidays a snap, especially with the fine tip blade, knife blade, and rotary cutter.

Here’s what you need to make your own:

Here’s how you can make your own:

  • In Cricut Design Space, open this project, by selecting “Customize”

  • Edit and/or add names

  • Click “Make It”

  • Cut your background layer first

  • Cut your heart layer second

  • Cut your names layer last

Helpful Tip: If you’re using 4.5’’ x 6’’ Cardstock Paper, instead of going back to the Canvas on Cricut Design Space, click on the background layer mat and continue to cut until you have your desired amount. Repeat for the heart rectangle layer.

  • Cut your fabric layer (4’’ x 3.75’’ rectangle)

  • Using double sided tape or a glue stick, apply the fabric to the heart layer

  • Using double sided tap or a glue stick, apply the fabric/heart layer to the background layer

  • Weed your name layer, apply transfer tape, and apply names to the background layer

  • Decorate with Valentine’s Day craft components such as ribbon, small flowers, or buttons

These cards are so quick and easy to make and if you switch out the shape, you’ll have a card for each holiday! A Christmas Tree, Shamrock, or Bunny for Easter—the possibilities are endless!

Personalized gifts really show your loved one how much you care.

Below are 25 of my favorite bloggers who also share in my love of personalized gifts.

And even thought it’s not Christmas, use your imagination and talent to create a personalized gift today!

I hope you enjoyed this non-quilty project as much as I enjoyed making it. They’re so cute!

I better get these in the mail so they’ll arrive in time for Valentine’s Day.
