Holiday Home Tour
Merry almost Christmas Eve!
A few weeks ago, I asked if you wanted to see our home decorated for Christmas.
And to my surprise, you said yes!
As most of you know, Jack and I recently moved to Salt Lake City so I could start my new job as the Director of Product Marketing for Riley Blake Designs. We’ve been busy settling into our new 1,200 square foot townhouse and decorating for Christmas has been extra fun.
Christmas is by far my favorite holiday and decorating usually starts right before Thanksgiving. We kept everything in a storage unit several blocks from our NYC apartment, so decorating was always a somewhat long task. But our new home has a garage so the task has gone smoother and faster! Yay!
Since we’ve been dating (going on 8 years!), Jack and I have been collecting both new and vintage Christmas decorations. We buy from local boutiques, vintage and thrift shops, as well as nationally known chain stores like Anthropologie.
We don’t always buy new decorations during the Christmas season, sometimes we wait until after the new year when everything is on sale. However, if we really, really like something, we go ahead and splurge.
Continuing reading below to see how we approached decorating this year.
For starters, we used a splash of pink on the main floor. This thread of color really pulls everything together and creates consistency amongst the space. If you’re nervous about mixing and matching or using a splash of color, I recommend decorating with a theme. Chain stores like Target or Hobby Lobby often sell decorations by themes. Themes make it really easy to decorate—you know exactly what works together.
Planting poinsettias in mixed media planters gives something rather traditional a modern twist. The tall plant stand we purchased at Cactus and Tropicals in SLC and the low plant stand was purchased from Amazon.
The vintage green glass bowl (purchased at Salt and Honey in SLC) on the tv console table was purchased for the sole purpose of using it for Christmas cards. It’s a fun new way to display them without creating clutter.
This year, we bought a small nordic tree (purchased at Target) for the landing upstairs. Instead of placing it on the floor with a traditional tree skirt, we used a plant stand (purchased at Amazon) and a brass bowl (purchased at Target) to give the tree height and character. We decorated the tree with vintage-like ornaments we bought at TJMaxx, Home Goods, and Anthropologie.
In our bedroom, we mixed things up by adding a Christmas bedding set.
I discovered a bedding set at Pottery Barn that I absolutely loved! We lucked out and found a full size set at our local store. Since our bed is queen, Jack made some alterations including turning the flat sheet into two additional standard and euro pillowcases. It pretty magical, y’all!
As far as our sewing room (I still can’t believe I get to say that!), we have a little more work to do, but it’s really coming together. We waited for nearly two months for the bed to arrive (purchased at Crate and Barrel) but, honestly it was worth it. It helps divide the sewing room—giving us a place to watch tv and guests a place to sleep.
The color mustard is having a moment and we’re here for it. We purchased the bedding from multiple places including Target, Home Goods, and Hobby Lobby. For the Christmas decorations, we decided to keep them pretty minimal.
Here’s a little secret: buy inexpensive frames with mats (purchased at Target) and holiday art from local artists and best friends to add a little something-something to your walls or picture ledges.
And yes, we even decorated our bathrooms. Haha!
I hope you enjoyed our holiday home tour. From my little family to yours—Merry Christmas!
