Worldwide Quilting Day + Free Pattern

Happy (belated) Worldwide Quilting Day!

How did you spend the day?

Shopping for fabric in your pajamas, finishing up an old work-in-progress or starting a new one? However you celebrated, I hope it was a magical day for you!

My friends at Fat Quarter Shop celebrated by releasing a free pattern called, World Piece and you’re going to love it! This fun 25 1/2’’ x 25 1/2’’ mini quilt features my Riley Blake Designs basic, Pin Drop.

You can download the free pattern here. They also have a World Piece Quilt Kit, which has all the fabric you need to make the mini quilt. Totally fun, right?

Well, the fun doesn’t stop there! There’s also a contest!

The contest is open to everyone…worldwide y’all! Head over to Fat Quarter Shop’s blog, The Jolly Jabber to get the details. While you’re at it, check out #worldpiecequilt on Instagram for inspiration and interact with others celebrating this awesome day.

Instead of making my version in another fabric collection (my basic, Blossom would have been pretty awesome too), I decided to stick closely to FQS’s version using Pin Drop. The Song Bird background (RBD’s Confetti Cottons basic) allows those tiny half square triangles to stand out.

Worried about making those tiny half square triangles? Try using the Triangles on a Roll.

For quilting, I used my Baby Lock Journey and the Digital Dual Feed Walking Foot to add a wavy, serpentine texture to this fun quilt. I decided to use Aurifil’s Monofilament Thread so the quilting wouldn’t distract from those tiny half square triangles and colors.

I can’t wait to see your version of the World Piece quilt.

It would be cute as a wall hanging, table topper, or a large pillow!
